Slow vertical climbing and clinging are the dominant positional behaviors of the most convincing reconstruction of the primary spatial niche of Megaladapis, a giant extinct prosimian from Madagascar. The vertical support model of Cartmill ('74) predicts that clawless mammals should exhibit relatively elongated forelimbs in expanded size ranges. The allometric corollaries of this model are tested on closely related interspecific samples of Megaladapis and selected extant prosimians. Megaladapis and indriids (vertical leapers and clingers) conform to the structural predictions of the model, and are clearly distinguished from the more pronograde lemurids and cheirogaleids. Extreme hindlimb reduction (negative allometry) is coupled with moderate forelimb elongation (positive allometry) in Megaladapis. These body proportions effectively optimize pedal friction during vertical climbing and minimize the moment of body weight pulling the animal away from the trunk. Positive forelimb allometry occurs in the indriids, while isometry obtains for the hindlimb. The adaptive significance of these morphological strategies are discussed, as are possible selective mechanisms which effect the extreme hindlimb reduction in Megaladapis. Illus. 1960.—The effects of x rays on the multiplication rates (MR), percent flowering (Fl%) and gross morphology of aseptically grown cultures of Lemna perpusilla, strain 6746, were studied. MR values are unaffected by doses of less than 300 r but are progressively depressed as the dose increases. The effect of a given dose on short-term MR values is the same at the 2 dosage intensities used, 500 and 2000 r/min. The inhibitory effect of intermediate doses on long-term growth is delayed; high doses have an “immediate” effect. Bleaching of fronds and cessation of growth occur in all cultures given 5,000 r or higher. Radiosensitivity is not altered by addition of yeast extract and casein hydrolysate to the medium. Depressed Fl% and seed production appear to be consequences of lowered MR. Morphological aberrations such as small size, epinasty and wrinkling are temporary. Pieces of brain are fixed in formalin ammonium bromide for about 4 days at room temperature, and given the following treatment: After washing, dehydrating and clearing, embed in paraffin, section and mount. Deparaffinize sections and pass through graded alcohols to water. Sensitize in 5% sodium sulfite for 2 hours, wash in distilled water and impregnate with silver diamminohydroxide solution 2-5 minutes at room temperature. Reduce in 2% formalin, wash in distilled water and tone in gold chloride. Fix in 5% hypo, counterstain with 1% picric acid, dehydrate and cover in balsam. Equally good results are obtained by impregnating with Hortega's strong silver carbonate.
